What a Car Exhaust Does and How to Know When to Replace Parts

The exhaust system consists of multiple parts and pipes. When the mixture of fuel and oxygen is ignited by the spark plugs, fumes are created. These fumes are toxic with harmful chemicals to the environment as well as humans. The pressure from the engine combustion is sent to the exhaust manifold where it is placed under pressure once more and directed down a series of pipes to the catalytic converter. Here the conversion process happens where the fumes are cleaned or transformed into Co2 and water vapor. Precious metals inside the converter like palladium, platinum, and rhodium clean the exhaust fumes into less toxic gases.

After the catalytic converter does its job, the fumes are redirected down the muffler, and out the tailpipe on your tailgate. Since much of the exhaust system is made of metal and located beneath the car's undercarriage, it is subject to rust and corrosion. Over the years, these parts are at risk of rust and the metal may break apart, chip, or disintegrate.
